Channel Idents Research

What is a channel ident?
A channel ident is a form of station identification clip that is played between programmes, incorporating the channel's logo, and accompanied by a contiunity announcer
who introduces the upcoming program & promotes other programmes.

Our task is to make our own channel ident in groups. We are planning to make a christmas ident for MTV, so I have researched some idents that will help us with planning our own.

BBC
The history of BBC television idents begins in the early 1950s, when the BBC first displayed a logo between programmes to identify its service. As new technology has become available, these devices have evolved from simple still black and white images to the sophisticated full colour short films seen today. With the arrival of digital services in the United Kingdom, and with them many more new channels, branding is perceived by broadcasters to be much more important, meaning that idents need to stand out from the competition.

E4 have also been big with their idents. E4's idents are bright, bold and animated. We like their idents because they are eye-catching and always random and silly. We want ours to be for a young audience so this can help us in planning our own.

MTV have had an enormous amount of different styles of idents over the past years that it's been around, with many worldwide aswell. The use of stopmotion has been used to create partially all of them. The use of colours and shapes really stood out to me, but all in all they were all quite random.
